Creation of the Chamba Animal Welfare Society

The Chamba Animal Welfare Society, Thiksey, was established through the vision and dedication of Mr. Phuntsog Wangial, the current President, and his team, who have been passionately working for animal welfare in Leh for many years. Before initiating the society, Mr. Wangial served as the General Secretary of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Leh. Recognizing the growing need for organized efforts, he, along with Mr. Sonam Phunchok (Onpo), approached His Eminence Thiksey Rinpoche with a proposal to create a dedicated welfare society.

With the blessing and guidance of His Eminence, the society was officially formed and named after Maitreya Buddha (Chamba), symbolizing compassion. Thiksey Monastery generously allotted over 100 kanals of land to support this noble initiative. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Wangial and his team also took the lead in feeding stray dogs in and around Leh town, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to animal welfare.

Chamba Animal Welfare Society embodies the spirit of compassion and unity, striving tirelessly to care for sick, injured, and abandoned animals. This initiative stands as a beacon of hope, showcasing the commitment of its members to creating a better future for animals in the region.
